my favourite calligraphy tools

When I first started off with calligraphy as a hobby, I was so incredibly overwhelmed with the plethora of tools available. To be honest, I still am.

There are SO many different pens, tools, inks, colours, papers and it can be a lot for anyone just starting off their calligraphy journey.

Not to worry though, I’ve compiled all my favourite calligraphy related tools for you in this post and exactly where to get them.

1 - calligraphy brush pens

  • Tombow Fudenosuke Brush Pens
These are honestly my go-to small tip brush pens that pretty much come with me to every event I go to. They are great for projects like place cards, envelopes, handwritten cards and more. They come in hard and soft tips for different levels of difficulty and grip. I generally recommend hard tip for calligraphy beginners as they are easier to control!

  • Zebra Zensations Brush Pens
Zebra Brush pens are quite comparable to the Tombows and I will often use them interchangeably, depending on how I feel! They come in varying sizes that create different stroke widths, from fine to extra bold.

  • Pentel Fude Touch Brush Sign Pen
Another favourite brush pen of mine with medium flexibility. The reason I love these is because they come in so many beautiful colours! I love playing around with these and find they are a really great option when you have a high volume event that may require some additional colours!

2 - pointed pen calligraphy

  • Nikko G Nibs
These Nikko G nibs have a fine tip and are very stiff, so great for those starting off in calligraphy

  • Moblique 2-in-1 by Luis Creations
The Moblique 2-in-1 pen holder is just such a reliable, light-weight and budget-friendly pen holders. You have the option of positioning your nib straight and/or oblique, and it comes in so many unique colours that anybody can find one that they love! I still bring mine to my on-site events, because they are just so reliable and if I lose them for whatever reason, they’re easy for me to replace!

  • Sumi Ink
There are so so many inks available in the realm of calligraphy that it’s hard for me to even keep up! For a classic black ink, I use sumi ink as it has a deep black colour, is easy to find wherever you live and budget friendly!

3 - calligraphy workshops

  • Beginner Calligraphy Workshop
Calligraphy workshops are such a fun & interactive way to learn from some of the best in your area. I took a few in my early days in starting out in calligraphy, and Sylvia’s workshop was probably one of my favourites! I highly recommend learning from her if you’re in the Toronto area!
